WHAT MADE CHRIST MOURN?
Matt. 23:37-39
The Bible has much to say about tears.
1. Weeping Sinner – Esau. Genesis 27:38 And
Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even
me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
2. Weeping Saint - Jeremiah. Jeremiah 3:21-22 A
voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the
children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have
forgotten the LORD their God. Return, ye backsliding children, and I
will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the
LORD our God.
3. Weeping Savior. – Jesus. John 11:33-35 When
Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her,
he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, And said, Where have ye laid him?
They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept.
Why Did He Weep?
I)
He saw the Dignity of the Soul. Jesus taught creation, not evolution. 1 Corinthians 8:6 But to
us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and
we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by
him. Man started
at the top and went down. God proved the dignity of the soul.
A) By creation. Genesis 1:26 And
God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth
upon the earth.
B) By the Cross. Luke 23:34 Then
said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they
parted his raiment, and cast lots.
1. The Cross Defeated Satan.
2. The Cross Delighted the Saviour.
3. The Cross Delivered the Sinner.
4. The Cross Declared the Scriptures.
C) By the Comforter. John 14:16 And I will pray the Father,
and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
1. The Work of the Spirit. John 3:3-7 Jesus
answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can
a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's
womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a
man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom
of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
2. The Wind of the Spirit. John 3:8 The
wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst
not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born
of the Spirit.
3. The Witness of the Spirit. John 3:11 Verily,
verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have
seen; and ye receive not our witness.
II)
He saw the Departure of the Soul. Here were a people that had left God out. With their mouth they worshiped,
but their heart was wasting. Matthew 15:18 But
those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they
defile the man. Man is
running from God. Isaiah 53:6 All we
like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the
LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Why?
A) His heart – Born a sinner. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is
none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God; Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful
above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
B) His head – Mind is blind. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this
world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the
glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
1. Physical blindness.
2. Mental blindness. 1 Corinthians 2:14 But
the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are
foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned.
C) Spiritual blindness. 2 Peter 1:8-9 For if
these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be
barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that
lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that
he was purged from his old sins.
III)
He saw the Depravity of the Soul. Matthew 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed
appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and
of all uncleanness.
A) They put laws before love.
1. Christ was moved with compassion. Matthew
9:35-36 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness
and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was
moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad,
as sheep having no shepherd.
B) They put creeds before Christ. Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you
through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
1. They crucified the God they pretended to worship. John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the
world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and
his own received him not.
IV)
He saw the Destiny of the Soul.
A) He saw their sentence. Romans 5:12-14 Wherefore, as by one man sin
entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for
that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not
imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
1. Our Victory. Romans 6:23 For
the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
B) He saw their separation. Ephesians 4:18 Having the understanding
darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in
them, because of the blindness of their heart:
1. Our Victory. Romans 8:35-39 Who
shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is
written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep
for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through
him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us
from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
C) He saw their suffering. Ephesians 2:12 That at that time ye were
without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers
from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
1. Our Victory. Ephesians 2:13-14 But now in Christ Jesus
ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is
our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of
partition between us;
D) He saw their salvation. Romans
5:17-21 For if by one man's offence death
reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift
of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the
offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by
the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto
justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners,
so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law
entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much
more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign
through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Our Victory. 1 John 5:4 For whatsoever
is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh
the world, even our faith.
