Where are the Nine?
Luke 17:11-19
I)
The
Recognition of the Lepers. (They Came to Jesus) Luke 17:12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten
men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
A) Coming
to Jesus brought hope for Restoration. Isaiah 57:18 I have seen
his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto
him and to his mourners. Psalms 51:12
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy
free spirit.
B) Coming
to Jesus brought hope for Recovery. 2 Corinthians 5:18 And all
things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
C) Coming
Jesus brought hope for Redemption. Romans 3:24 Being
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Colossians
1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the
forgiveness of sins: Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying,
Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast
slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;
D) Coming
to Jesus brought hope for the Remedy. Isaiah 53:5 But he was
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are
healed.
II)
The
Reaction of the Lepers. (They Cried to Jesus) Luke 17:13 And
they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
A) Crying
to Jesus brought Help. Hebrews
13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is
my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Psalms 116:6 The
LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.
B) Crying
to Jesus brought Hope. Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised
before the world began; Hebrews 6:18-19 That by two immutable things, in
which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and
which entereth into that within the veil;
C) Crying
to Jesus brought Healing. Psalms
147:3 He healeth the broken in heart, and
bindeth up their wounds.
D) Crying
to Jesus brings Heaven. Romans
10:9-13 That if thou shalt confess with thy
mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the
scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is
no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich
unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord
shall be saved.
III)
The
Reaction of the Saviour.
(He saw their condition) Luke 17:14 And when he saw
them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it
came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
A) He
responded by their Distress. Psalms
71:20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken
me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
B) He
responded by their Distance. Ephesians
4:18 Having the understanding darkened,
being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them,
because of the blindness of their heart:
C) He
responded by their Damage. Romans
3:23-26 For all have sinned, and come short
of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation
through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of
sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say,
at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him
which believeth in Jesus.
IV)
The
Recognition of the Saviour. ( He saw their commitment) Luke 17:15-19 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back,
and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his
feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were
there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that
returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise,
go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
A) Only
one was Gaving to God. Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed
down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
B) Only
one was Grateful to God. 1
Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to
God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
C) Only
one was Glorifying God. Psalms
35:28 And my tongue shall speak of thy
righteousness and of thy praise all the day long. Psalms 51:15 O
Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
D) Only
one was Granted by God. Arise, go
thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole (saved).
